Build-a-box: how to create a subscription box on Shopify

What build-a-box means, why it increases adoption and reduces churn, and how to create a Shopify subscription box billed with Mercado Pago.

Published October 16, 2026

A build-a-box subscription lets customers choose what they receive in each delivery and edit it whenever they want, instead of always receiving the same items. It is one of the most effective subscription formats because it gives customers control: it increases adoption, reduces churn and raises order value. With Reval, on Shopify and billed with Mercado Pago, you can offer build-a-box subscriptions with variable or fixed pricing and let each customer build their own box.

Why it works so well

  • More adoption

People subscribe more readily when they feel in control of what they receive, rather than being tied to a fixed bundle.

  • Less churn

When customers get tired of the same items, they change their box contents instead of canceling. Editing instead of canceling is key to retention.

  • Higher order value

Customers add products as they build their box, and you can offer one-time extras (add-ons) at the end.

Dynamic boxes vs fixed-price boxes

Both work; the choice depends on how you want to communicate pricing.

  • Dynamic box

The price is the sum of the products the customer chooses, at plan pricing, with optional volume discounts. Ideal when you want maximum flexibility.

  • Fixed-price box

A set price for each box size; the products inside do not change the price. Ideal for brands that prefer a round number and a simple promise.

How to set it up with Reval, step by step

  1. Choose the box type (dynamic or fixed) and frequency plans.
  2. Define eligible products customers can add and sizes (a flexible range or fixed sizes).
  3. Add subscription discounts and, for dynamic boxes, volume discounts.
  4. Add one-time upsells at the end of the box-building flow.
  5. Publish it on Shopify so customers can build their box on a dedicated page, billed with Mercado Pago.
  6. Subscribers can then edit their box through their portal: change products, quantities or size, effective from the next delivery.

Which brands it suits

Any repeat-consumption brand with variety: food, coffee, supplements, skincare, electrolytes, drinks and personal care. If you have multiple products or flavors, build-a-box is almost always the best subscription format.

Brands already using it

  • Ecoterra (Chile)

Its “Ecobox” lets customers build a box product by product and edit it from their account.

  • Drink Suma (Argentina)

An electrolyte box with a choice of flavors.

  • Sumay (Colombia)

Skincare rituals and the option to build your own bundle.
