How to bill Shopify subscriptions with Mercado Pago

Shopify does not do it natively. This is the practical guide to selling subscriptions on your Shopify store billed with Mercado Pago, with no Shopify Plus and no migration.

Published on September 16, 2026

Shopify does not bill subscriptions with Mercado Pago natively: its recurring billing works with a set of gateways (Shopify Payments, Stripe, PayPal Express, Authorize.net and Adyen) that does not include Mercado Pago. To sell subscriptions on your Shopify store billed with Mercado Pago you need a solution that bridges both. That is exactly what Reval solves: subscriptions on your current Shopify store, billed with Mercado Pago, with no Shopify Plus and no platform migration.

Can you bill Shopify subscriptions with Mercado Pago?

Yes, but not with Shopify's native tooling. Shopify handles products, checkout and orders very well, but its subscription engine only auto-charges through certain international gateways. Mercado Pago, the most used local payment method across much of LATAM, is not on that list for automatic recurring billing. The way to do it is to add a subscription solution integrated with the Mercado Pago API, such as Reval.

Why Shopify alone does not solve it

The problem is two halves that never meet:

  • Shopify knows products, inventory, shipping and taxes, but its native subscription does not bill with Mercado Pago.
  • Mercado Pago knows how to charge on a recurring basis, but that recurring charge is “money only”: it knows nothing about products and creates no orders in your store.

To sell subscriptions with Mercado Pago you have to join those halves: Mercado Pago executes the charge and every charge shows up as a real Shopify order. That bridge is what Reval does.

How subscription billing with Mercado Pago works

  1. The customer subscribes

From the product page, with the frequency and discount you defined.

  2. Mercado Pago charges the card

The card is tokenized in the buyer's browser and Mercado Pago charges every cycle via automatic debit.

  3. Shopify creates the order

Every approved charge creates a real Shopify order, with line items, shipping and taxes.

Mercado Pago moves the money; Shopify stays the source of truth. Your inventory, logistics and invoicing do not change.

How to launch subscriptions with Mercado Pago, step by step

  1. Have your store on Shopify

No Shopify Plus and no migration needed: it runs on your current store.

  2. Connect Mercado Pago

The solution integrates with your account to execute recurring charges.

  3. Define your plans

Which products you offer by subscription, at which frequencies (for example every 30 or 60 days) and with which discount.

  4. Set up the experience

The product-page buy box, the self-service portal (pause, resume, swap products, add-ons, address and card) and the marketing integrations (Klaviyo or Shopify Flow).

  5. Launch and measure

Track MRR, adoption and retention from the dashboard.

With Reval, the team handles installation and setup for you: it is not an app you download and configure alone, we leave it running on your store.

What to keep in mind

  • Choose carefully what to offer by subscription: it works best for repeat consumption (food, coffee, supplements, cosmetics, pets, wellness).
  • Failed charges: when a charge fails, Mercado Pago retries. Keep notifications configured (Klaviyo or Shopify Flow) to win the customer back; a pre-charge reminder also reduces declines.
  • Taxes and shipping: calculated per cycle, like any Shopify order.
  • Countries: Reval operates in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay.
  • Mercado Pago mandate limits: the customer can change card and address from the portal, but the next charge date cannot be moved.
  • Retention: add levers to raise value per customer (add-ons, customer-built boxes) and to reduce churn (rewards on specific cycles).

Reval, native subscriptions or another app?

If you need to bill with Mercado Pago on Shopify, Shopify's native subscription does not help because it does not bill with Mercado Pago, and the leading global apps (Recharge, Skio) do not either. Reval is built specifically for that scenario. The capability-by-capability detail is in the comparisons.

A real case

The Wellness Project, a supplements brand, added subscriptions to its Shopify store with Reval, billed with Mercado Pago. Within 7 days, 7% of its revenue was already recurring.
