Involuntary churn: how to recover declined charges with Mercado Pago

Many subscription cancellations are not customers choosing to leave: they are declined charges. How to reduce involuntary churn on Shopify with Mercado Pago.

Published October 16, 2026

Involuntary churn means losing subscribers not because they decide to leave, but because a charge fails: an expired card, insufficient funds or a spending limit. In a subscription, every declined charge that is not recovered is a customer lost without anyone choosing it. This matters especially in LATAM, where payment methods decline more often. Reducing it takes three things: notifying customers before the charge, letting the payment provider retry, and giving customers a simple way to update their card. With Reval on Shopify, billed with Mercado Pago, those three pieces are covered.

What is involuntary churn (and why you do not see it)

Voluntary churn is visible: the customer opens the portal and cancels. Involuntary churn is silent: a cycle charge fails, nobody finds out in time, and the subscription stops. It does not look like a cancellation; it looks like billing stopped. That is why many brands underestimate it: they are losing recurring revenue and reading it as bad luck, when it is a problem they can address.

Why it matters so much in LATAM

Cards in the region decline more often: low limits, expiration dates, insufficient funds at the end of the month. If your recurring charges depend on international processing, you add even more declines. Billing through a local acquirer such as Mercado Pago already improves approval; even so, some charges will fail, and retention depends on what you do when that happens.

The three levers for recovery

  • 1. Notify customers before the charge

A reminder before billing ("we will charge you in X days") reduces declines and complaints: customers know the charge is coming and can prepare their card. In Reval this is enabled through the "Upcoming renewal" reminder: Reval emits the event a few days before billing, and your Klaviyo (or Shopify Flow) sends the email.

  • 2. Retry the charge

When a charge fails, Mercado Pago retries according to its own logic before the subscription stops. This is not a Reval retry engine: the acquirer handles retries, and Reval records the status of each attempt.

  • 3. Let customers update their own card

Most failed charges can be resolved with a new card. In the Reval self-service portal, subscribers update their payment method without contacting you. When a charge fails, Reval emits a failed-charge event, which your Klaviyo uses to send an email such as "your payment failed, update your card".

How to set it up

Together, these three pieces turn declined charges into recovered charges.

  • Connect Klaviyo (or Shopify Flow) to Reval and enable subscription events.
  • Set how many days before billing to send the Upcoming renewal reminder.
  • Build two simple Klaviyo flows: one for upcoming renewal and one for failed charges, asking customers to update their card and linking to the portal.
  • Keep the self-service portal visible so customers can change their payment method in seconds.
