How to sell skincare by subscription on Shopify

Skincare is a daily routine: products run out predictably and consistency is, quite literally, what makes them work. That is why the subscription is not an add-on — it is the natural model. Here is how to set it up on Shopify billing with Mercado Pago.

If you sell cosmetics or skincare on Shopify, your customers already have a routine: cleanser, serum, moisturizer, sunscreen. Those products are used every day and they run out. The subscription solves replenishment and, along the way, helps with something that benefits your customer as much as it benefits you: staying consistent. With Reval you can bill those subscriptions with Mercado Pago, on your current Shopify store, with no Shopify Plus and no migration.

Why skincare is ideal for subscriptions

  • It is a routine, not an impulse purchase

Use is daily and sustained, so the repeat purchase is built into the habit.

  • Predictable consumption

A serum or cleanser lasts a fairly stable number of weeks. The replenishment frequency is calculated, not guessed.

  • Consistency is the result

Skincare shows results when used regularly, over weeks. The subscription prevents gaps from forgetfulness, so the customer sees results and stays. Your incentive (they stay subscribed) and theirs (it works for them) point in the same direction.

The two models in this vertical

  1. 1. Routine replenishment (the core)

The customer subscribes to the products they already use (their cleanser, serum, sunscreen) and receives them before they run out. It is the highest-LTV model, because you occupy their entire shelf. The strongest play is offering the full routine as a bundle (AM/PM), which lifts the ticket and retention in one move.

  2. 2. Discovery box (beauty box)

A curated box with products or trial sizes that rotates every month. It works for acquisition, for introducing launches and for the audience that enjoys trying new things. You can combine both: a fixed routine plus a discovery surprise on certain cycles.

What to offer and at what frequency

The frequency depends on how long each product lasts. A buy box that suggests it by format prevents pile-up.

Suggested frequency by product duration
ProductTypical durationSuggested frequency
Cleanser~1-2 monthsMonthly or every two months
Serum / treatment~1-2 monthsMonthly or every two months
Moisturizer / cream~1-2 monthsMonthly or every two months
Sunscreen (daily use)~1-1.5 monthsMonthly

Sunscreen is the ideal case: it should be used every day and it runs out, but it is one of the most abandoned repeat purchases. Putting it on subscription is a service to the customer and guaranteed recurrence for you.

How much to discount

A 10% to 15% discount for subscribing works well, reinforced with skincare benefits: samples of new products, shipping included, or a travel-size gift on certain cycles. The value is not just the price: it is never running out of their product.

Retention: where a skincare subscriber drops off (and how to prevent it)

  • “I don't see results yet”

It is the most common cause of early churn, and it is cultural to the category. Fight it with education (results take weeks) and by rewarding continuity right when the customer considers cancelling: with Reval you can give a sample or a one-time benefit on specific cycles (for example the 2nd or 3rd month).

  • “I have more than enough”

Let them skip a delivery from the portal instead of cancelling.

  • They want to try something new

Let them switch products or add one without cancelling. The appetite for novelty is high in cosmetics: channel it with add-ons and discovery, don't lose it.

  • Seasonality

In summer, sunscreen and lightweight textures rise; in winter, richer creams. Letting customers adjust their routine by season keeps the subscription alive.

  • Declined charge

In LATAM, billing with Mercado Pago (a local acquirer) approves more than international processing; you avoid losing subscribers to a preventable decline.

The detail that defines everything in LATAM: billing

Shopify does not bill subscriptions with Mercado Pago natively, and neither do the global apps (Recharge, Skio). For a cosmetics brand in LATAM, every declined charge is an interrupted routine and a customer who, without meaning to, stops seeing results.

Reval bills subscriptions with Mercado Pago, and every approved charge lands as a real order in Shopify.

How to get started

On your current Shopify store, with no Shopify Plus and no migration: you define the buy box on your routine products, the full-routine bundle, frequencies by product duration and the self-service portal so the customer can adjust, switch or add without cancelling. With Reval, the team gets it running and helps you shape the offer.

A real case in repeat consumption

The Wellness Project, a supplement brand, added subscriptions to its Shopify store with Reval, billing with Mercado Pago. Another repeat-consumption vertical with the same logic as skincare: predictable replenishment and a customer who does not want to run out. In 7 days, 7% of its revenue was already recurring.
